The problem with untrained video presence-
- It ALWAYS comes through, consciously or unconsciously, and is distracting.
- Eyes on preview screen - fine to check occasionally to make sure you're in frame. YouTube is about eye contact.
- Long pauses while talking, filler words. - It's ok to pause, then say what you're thinking all at once.
- Not speaking with certainty - It's ok to be uncertain, just be certain about it.
- Non-purposeful or unnecessary movement.
- Laugher that's looking for approval or alleviating stress.
- Monotone, or not a lot of tone variance. (interest)
- Sounds like talking to a camera, not to a friend.
Action Step - Break Past Barriers
Strategies:
- Record the same video 5 times in a row.
- Have a staring contest with the camera.
- Film yourself while holding the camera.
- Laugh at yourself on camera.
- Film yourself in public.
- Watch raw recordings of yourself.
How To: Each time you make a video, pick one of these strategies and apply it. Bonus points if you apply multiple in the same video.
